ITALY - Workers strikes and blockade in Trieste

In the important port city of Italy, Trieste, police was cracking down on a justified protest by dockworkers. Since October 15, Italy has been enforcing proof of a "green passport"¹ in the workplace. Italy has the strictest COVID measures in the workplace in Europe. Around 6.500 dockworkers and activists have been protesting against these measures for days in Trieste alone. Also in Genoa, about 300 workers blocked the entrance to the port.

They are treading on our Constitution," said one protester. "I say no to this discrimination." Protests broke out in quite a few cities. Demonstrators repeatedly tried to block roads or squares and stop traffic.

Those who come to work without the so-called "green pass" risk up to 1,500 euros in fines. Those who stay away from work because they cannot show the document face unpaid time off. Those who choose not to be vaccinated must take a Corona test at their own expense and repeat it every 48 to 72 hours, depending on the type of test. Fines for employers who do not allow their employees to show the "green passport" range from 400 to 1000 euros.

Now the police used water cannons against the blockades in front of the port in Trieste.
