Patrols everywhere, fire brigades nowhere! This sentence went viral, because it reflects the reality of the Greek population in view of the current catastrophic fires!
While the media of the rulers try to cover it up, the Greek masses know very well about their crimes. There are by far more public forces and resources for repression and surveillance than for fighting the dangerous forest fires!
Firefighters have been cut and decimated, as has their equipment, which is inadequate and outdated. The main burden is on volunteers and the affected residents. Among the volunteers, there has already been one death! Dozens of villages have been evacuated, hundreds of houses have been lost, as well as hundreds of crops and jobs. But often there is not even a plan for the evacuation of towns and villages!
While the rulers say "we'll do what we can," for decades they pursued policies that proved the opposite: The Forest Service, which was responsible for guarding the forests, but also for the immediate extinguishing of fires was de facto abolished, the firefighting staff was reduced and there is lack of and obsolete equipment! In the past, there was always at least one fire truck available in the mountain villages and on the islands, but this no longer exists.
The great solidarity among the population, the numerous helpers are admirable, but there is an urgent need for professional firefighters and appropriate equipment!
The masses are rightly angry, having seen the comparisons. While there is a shortage of firefighters, the police apparatus is being expanded. While on all fronts of the fires 2,000 firefighters are continuously in use, 5,000 policemen were ready to fight against the masses at a demonstration in Athens alone. For many the picture confirms itself: To the protection of the population one cuts, while on protestors, young people, government critics, homeless one hunts - allegedly for the fight against criminality!
The inhabitants of the affected areas cannot hope for help from the rulers, in the gene part it is nothing else than mockery when they hear today "it does not matter that you have lost everything as long as you live". The catastrophic situation due to the forest fires is not simply a natural disaster - it is the policy of the rulers, it is the imperialist plundering of Greece, which drives the masses of people into great misery!
