ALGERIA - 20.000 protest against government

Big demonstrations took place in Algier and other Algerian cities last Friday the 22nd of February, after the country's president Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced he would run in the next elections for a 5th mandate. When the demonstration in Algier headed to the presidential palace, the police shoot several rounds of tear gas and arrested 41 protesters. The Directorate General for National Security said on Saturday it had detained 41 people over "public disorder, vandalism, damage to property, violence and assault". The protesters threw stones in response. The protests were made, even thought there is an official ban on demonstrations in Algier, which was imposed in 2001.
