In the liberation struggle for an independent Biafra 127 women members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are held in prison. On the 23rd of August, 15 women were jailed in front of the Owerri Magistrate's Court, they were protesting for the freedom of the political prisoners. They are accused of committing crimes. The Nigeria Police Forces used over 100 tear gas canisters on a group of women who were protesting. In the prisons the women, who are between the ages 18 to 72, are being serially tortured with chemical agents, even if they have no trial, they are staying inprisoned.
The Indigenous People of Biafra has declared the September 14th as "a day of general strike, mourning an resistance across Biafraland". They call out for this strike, "because of the persecution, genocide and humilation of Igbo and Biafran people by the Federal Government, which culminated in the incarceration of 127 women in Owerri prisons". The IPOB called out:
"All businesses, offices, markets, schools and road transportation will be shut down for 24 hours from midnight of the 13th of September. There will be no human or vehicular movement across Biafraland. People are expected to stay at home to pray for the souls of the brave and reflect upon the bondage our land is under. Any person or persons seen outside on the 14th of September 2018 will be classed as an enemy of the people."
