TURKEY – Demonstration on International Day against Violence against Women

On November 25, thousands of women traditionally demonstrated in Taksim Square for the International Day Against Violence Against Women. The focus was on the demand for the re-entry into the Istanbul Convention. In July this year, Erdogan decided to withdraw from this convention, arguing that there is sufficient protection against violence against women in the country. In addition, the marching women demanded the resignation of the president. Despite the numerous police blockades, the militant women managed to reach Taksim Square. The reaction was the use of tear gas and rubber bullets on the demonstrating women. With slogans like "We are not silent, not afraid, not obeying" the women defended themselves against the police attacks.
