PAPUA NEW GUINEA - Rally for independence

On December 1st, people belonging to the Papua (indigenous people) marched to the independence of West Papua from Dutch colonial rule.

The organization - Organisasi Papua Merdeka (Free Papuan Organization) is struggling for independence since 1964. In the early sixties, a council was set up that had its own administrative tasks and its own flag - the morning star flag. When the Dutch colonial rulers no longer claimed the area of West Papua, Indonesian troops immediately invaded West Papua and claimed it. Officially, it was awarded by the UN administration to Indonesia in 1963.

With the already forbidden morning star flag they demanded a democratic self-determination with the demonstration. In Surabaya, a rally was attacked by a nationalist group - 16 Papuans were injured.1,055 police officers, with the support of two army groups and the Public Order Bureau, intervened in the demonstration. They arrested 537 people.
